THE 7^th VIRTUAL MOOT COURT COMPETITION, 2026

The Republic of Indigo is a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic, republic with a population of 1.477 billion approximately. The citizens of the country are engaged in different professions and businesses.

That due to the recent advancement in technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the world it has been used in different walks of life including law.

During proceedings before multiple judicial and non-judicial fora across the Republic of Indigo, the courts have come across a number of problems. It has come to the notice of this Court that citations relied upon by the litigants, advocates and the judges in a number of matters have been researched upon using different AI platforms. The research output of the citations generated from the AI platforms are fictitious and non-existent in some matters which can have a drastic impact on the decision of the matters.

It has also been brought to the knowledge of this Court that practicing advocates have been using AI platforms for various works such as scanning, sharing data, compiling documents, service of petitions, optical character recognition (OCR) of documents, bookmarking case records, drafting, tools to assist digital files during arguments etc.

That this Court is of the view that the usage of AI needs to be monitored and thus have taken Suo Motu cognizance of the issue. Notices are ordered to be issued to the Bar Council of Indigo, respective State Bar Councils, Supreme Court Bar Association of Indigo and all Bar Associations throughout the Republic of Indigo.

That this Court has framed 4 issues:

→ Whether or not submitting non-existent AI generated citations amounts to professional misconduct and contempt under the relevant laws?

→ Whether or not uploading documents provided by clients on AI platforms for the purposes of scanning, sharing data, compiling documents, service of petitions, optical character recognition (OCR) of documents, bookmarking case records, drafting, tools to assist digital files during arguments etc. would be a violation of attorney client privilege under the relevant laws?

→ Whether or not a senior advocate (designated/non-designated) can be held vicariously liable for the misuse using AI platforms by a junior advocate associated or working under the said senior advocate (designated/non-designated)?

→ Whether or not non-disclosure of usage of AI platforms by an advocate for any work relating to the case to the concerned Court would amount to violation of any law as on date?

That after notices were issued, the above 4 issues were framed for the purposes of adjudication and the matter is posted for final hearing of the Bar Council of Indigo & State Bar Councils of Indigo and Supreme Court of Indigo Bar Association & other Bar Associations of Republic of Indigo.

Note:  The case is entirely fictional and created solely for academic purposes. In the event of any similarities with any case, it is purely coincidental. The above Moot Proposition is only for academic purposes and does not intend to harm the goodwill or reputation of any person.

Rules for the Competition:

• I. 3 students from the same law college are eligible to form a team for the purpose of participating in this competition. One college can send a maximum of 2 teams.
• II. The Team shall comprise 3 members, viz., Speaker No. 1, Speaker No. 2 and Researcher.
• III. Teams shall be known by the team codes assigned by the firm.
• IV. Each team shall argue IN FAVOUR OF the issues using law, case laws and rational reasoning on behalf of Bar Council of Indigo & State Bar Councils of Indigo.
• V. Each team shall argue IN OPPOSITION TO the issues using law, case laws and rational reasoning on behalf of Supreme Court of Indigo Bar Association & other Bar Associations of Republic of Indigo.
• VI. The competition revolves around an issue for which Suo Motu cognizance has been taken by the Hon’ble Supreme Court. In this competition, on one hand teams will be representing the Bar Council while arguing in favour of the issues and on the other hand the teams will be representing the Bar Associations while opposing the issues.
• VII. Students of all years of the Five-year and Three-year law courses are eligible to participate in this Competition.
• VIII. Registration Fees for each team- Rs. 750/-. The said amount can be paid via Google Pay on +91 8209156354. In case the students want to pay the fees to a bank account, an email requesting the bank details to be sent.
• IX. A mail agreeing to participate shall be sent by the participants on or before 15/09/2026. The said email shall consist of the full names of the team members, the college name, the postal addresses with pin codes of the team members, mobile numbers of all the team members, a scanned copy of the College ID Card of the team and a screenshot of the proof of payment of registration fees. (The said address is required for the purposes of dispatching participation / merit certificates and mementos, if any. In case the team wants all the certificates to be sent to one address, then one address can be provided; however, in the event the participants wish certificates to be dispatched to their respective addresses, then separate addresses have to be provided).
• X It is mandatory to send the acceptance email through the official email IDs of the colleges or through Moot Court Society Email IDs; however, acceptance emails can be sent through the personal email ID of any team member if the college does not have any such societies.
• XI. For all further correspondence, the teams shall communicate using the same email ID used for sending the confirmation email and no communication from new Email IDs will be entertained.
• XII. Each speaker shall speak for 15 minutes, subject to extension granted by the judges.
• XIII. A steady internet connection is to be maintained.
• XIV. Cameras are to be turned on at all times during the rounds.
• XV. Judgments/citations/precedents referred to during arguments can be screen-shared online and there is no need to send compendiums.
• XVI. Breach of deadlines shall entail disqualification.
• XVII. In case, during the rounds, if there is any internet interruption from the side of the participant, then a 5-minute extension only will be granted, subject to the discretion of the judges.
• XVIII. Feedback after each round shall be provided.
• XIX. All clarifications are to be sent on or before 25/09/2026
• XXI. Dress Code for Men: White Shirt, Black or Grey Blazer, and Black or Grey formal pants. Dress Code for Women: White Salwar Kameez, White Shirt, Black or Grey Blazer, and Black or Grey formal pants or skirt.
• XXII. Failure to follow the dress code shall entail disqualification, subject to the discretion of the Judge.

• XXIII. The competition will be held on 05/12/2026 & 06/12/2026. An Inaugural ceremony shall take place on 05/12/2026, which shall be attended by all participants without fail. Not attending the same shall entail a deduction of 10 marks from the preliminary rounds.
• XXIV. The Moot Court Coordinators are Ms. Mrudhula Orunganti and Ms. Ojaswi Chandrakar, who can be contacted during working hours, i.e., 04:00 PM - 09:00 PM at +91 9392597322 & +91 9009762230. However, to avoid confusion, all queries shall be sent via email only and not via WhatsApp/text.

Memorial Rules:

1. Each team is to prepare Written Memorials from the side of the Bar Council of Indigo & State Bar Councils of Indigo and Supreme Court of Indigo Bar Association & other Bar Associations of Republic of Indigo.

2. Blue Colour Cover Page for the Written Memorial of the Bar Council of Indigo & State Bar Councils of Indigo.

3. Red Colour Cover Page for the Written Memorial of the Supreme Court of Indigo Bar Association & other Bar Associations of Republic of Indigo.

4. Soft Copies of the Memorials are to be sent on or before 14/11/2026, by 05:00 PM.

5. Participants shall not submit hard copies of the Memorials.

6. Memorials shall not exceed 4 A4-size pages of MS Word docx. However, the index, index of authorities, facts of the case, issues framed, summary of arguments and prayer shall not be included while arriving at 4 pages. Marks shall be deducted in the event the arguments exceeds 4 pages.

7. Body of Contents: Font size- 12, Font Style- Times New Roman, Line Spacing- 1.5, Paragraph Spacing- 0, Margin- Default as mentioned in MS Word docx.

8. Footnotes: Font size- 10, Font Style- Times New Roman, Line Spacing- 1

9. Memorials will be exchanged between the respective teams on 04/12/2026.
